xx Unity RC1
Yesterday at 09:17:59 PM by richardwest
Unity have released an RC1 ISO and I have been trying it out. I'm happily using the 64bit version with Synergy KDE4 on my Tosh laptop and have tried the 32 bit version on the Eeep.

So far so good but I am still having the same -drop out to login- on the live version. Jeremiah thought that the problems were down to the intel video driver so I changed to vesa graphics and still have the same problem. I don't have this problem on a normal install or using a desktop other than KDE.

So, what I am going to do is try and build a system using a different desktop, XFCE looks favourite at the moment. It will take me some time to get it as I want it because I have only ever used KDE since I switched to Linux 10 years ago, but I will try and get an ISO up as soon as I can, probably call it Synergy-Lite or something, unless Jeremiah steps in with some insight or even an ISO.

I can't call on Jeremiah for help at the moment as he's not been around for several days, I am now officially giving up on getting a live system with KDE but I'm not giving up Synergy.

Sorry all I have been really busy with a ton of stuff but development keeps going.

My main focus hasn't been netbooks just yet but getting a build system and something that I can just churn out packages with. Right now this place has really one team lead and that's Richard, if I can get my butt in gear and really start testing on my EeePC we'll have two. With that thought though I want to make everything as easy and as open to the community as possible. Here's been my progress with that aspect.

I have my own blog (though rarely updated lately)

Synergy Linux related stuff (will be updated more often soon)
http://www.Synergy-Linux.com

We have out own repository (recently changed folder structure, just KDE 4 and related packages for now)
http://www.synergy-linux.com/rpms/x86/kde4

If you're one of the (lucky) few who have a netbook that's 64bit (based on Intel's SU2300, SU4100) there's not a Synergy Release for you but you can install and use Unity Linux as a Base and use out 64bit packages:
http://www.synergy-linux.com/rpms/x86_64/kde4

If you're the adventurous type and like to build your own packages adding your own customizations, patches etc.. we have a svn...

xx Quick & Dirty ISO
January 25, 2010, 07:15:04 PM by richardwest
I've released a new ISO for those who wish to test it out.

It's in the download area. (Members only.)

(For some reason it shows a a zero byte file, but I have tested it and it downloads and works OK.)

It's based on Jeremiah's last ISO, updated to current Unity and Jeremiah's latest KDE.

It is still in the QD series i.e. pre alpha so don't expect too much. It works fine as a full install but can still be flakey when run as a "Live" system. I suggest that anyone trying it first tries it in "Kiosk" mode.

Apart from the issues with running "live" there is the problem in that it doesn't shut down correctly and even in "live" mode, it still asks for language, keyboard etc. on each boot. (I can cure this, but only by "fixing" the locale)

xx Synergy Logo

I have asked the Unity Graphics Crew to help us out on a new Logo, here's the first logo suggestion from GeminiGuy. I quite like it. What's your opinion?

xx Snippets about Synergy-Linux.

The Changes File is dead, long live the Changes Folder.

With the newer kernels, we can use a folder instead of a file.

The folder will only be as big as the data it contains instead of being a fixed size determined at creation time. This makes it easier to back up and also that the contents are readable without having to do any fancy loop mounting stuff.

Synergy-Linux will be replacing EeePCLinuxOS. It will be based on Unity-Linux, a core distribution for distributions like ours to build on.

Unity is currently at a pre-Alpha stage but I have been able to run it on the Eeep with persistence working  Grin

Hopefully it won't be long before I have an ISO for you to test.
